A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings

A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings

This story was written by the author Garcia Marquez in 1968. This fiction has as protagonist a old man with huge wings. People start to call him an angel, but I am not very sure that he is an angel. He is a round character. All the other characters (minor) are flat, except the wife. She did not like the angel when he appears in her house, but she changes her idea about him later. The baby is a flat character as well when I see the perspective of the story, but his physical condition is round. At the beginning of the story he is very sick and at the end he gets better.
The story seems to be a realism mixed with fantasy. I am not sure how to clarify .The setting is the beach. The main idea is also unclear for me. I believe the author wants to say that sometimes people are not what they seem to be. The old man is a calm and patient man. During the story he does not do anything bad, but he is a suspect character. He is surreal.
The story has a lot of symbolism as the wings, the spider woman...and some contrasts as well.
Overall, I like the story.

  1. I can agree with you that the story's message was a bit unclear. It could mean, like you said, that people are not always what they seem to be or that you should treat others how you would want to be treated. The family treated him horribly and in turn, the man waited until he was strong enough to fly away. I also think he was a suspect character because of the good and bad connotations associated with angels. His black, crow-like wings may have given the impression that he was the Angel of Death. I think in the end, Garcia Marquez leaves it for us to decide what the man really is, which makes the story that much more intriguing.

  2. I also enjoyed the short story, "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings," by Garcia Marquez. I see the old man being a round character as well. Throughout the story, he heals and rests with the couple as well as gets torchured and played with by the people in the community. He is able to grow strong again and in the end of the story, fly away. The wife is a round character as well, being in the beggining of the story she wasn't fond of the Old Man. Throughout the story, and in the end she grew to care for the Old Man and was sad to see him go. The setting of the story was also a little awkward to me as I read. But, the understanding of how the old man came in from the store makes sense. I did really enjoy this short story. It is one of my favorites.
